That’s what Senate Democrats are saying this morning after successfully fending off the GOP’s attempted coup. With the Democrats holding control of the Senate by a single vote, the Republicans apparaently came within a whisker of convincing a disgruntled Ralph Northam to vote with the GOP on a maneuver to install co-chairs of the powerful Senate Finance and Courts of Justice committees.

The abortive coup demonstrates just how precarious one vote control can be in a legislative body. A lone member of the majority who is either disgruntled or has a strong individual agenda has the potential to hold the entire party hostage. The Democrats this morning have a little taste of how the Republicans in the House felt when their slim majority at the end of the 1990’s was continually compromised by moderates who abandoned the party to side with the Dems.

You gotta love this business!
