William Fralin, a member of the House of Delegates since 2004, announced today that he will not run for re-election this November, citing family and business obligations.

A Republican who represents parts of Botetourt and Roanoke counties, Fralin had gained respect from members of both parties for his intelligence, civility, and his genuine commitment to public service.

Fralin’s dad, Heywood Fralin, is a successful businessman who is currently serving with distinction as Rector of UVA.  I’ve had the privilege of working with Heywood on a number of activities  and he is a model of selfless civic engagement and what some call servant leadership, always putting the good of the Commonwealth and the purpose he is serving before his own interests.

William Fralin brought the same qualities to the legislature.

Given William’s character and talents, I’m hoping that he still finds time to follow his dad’s footsteps down the path of  civic engagement.

Virginia will be a better place if he does.
