Earlier this morning, I wrote about how ”The Invite” is becoming the hot new political tactic.

It works this way.

I take a position on an issue or a controversy and then I ask my political opponent, who I know does not share my point of view,  to “join me” in making a statement about the matter.

And then when the RSVP comes back with the inevitable “Regrets,” I express my disappointment at my opponent’s unwillingness to join such  a worthy cause.

I  mentioned in the post that the GOP was running away with the invitation derby and jokingly remarked that wasn’t it time for Tim Kaine to ”invite Eric Cantor to ‘join him’ in a letter to Rush Limbaugh expressing disappointment in his statement that he wants President Obama to fail.”

It didn’t take long.

I had the right invitation, just the wrong people.

This afternoon Terry McAuliffe issued “The Invite” to Bob McDonnell asking the GOP candidate for Governor to “join me in condemning the remarks Rush Limbaugh made wishing for the President to fail.”

As we watch the four candidates for Governor go at it for the next eight months, I’m wondering whether anyone will ever issue to the others an invitation that you really can’t refuse.
