I have lived in northern Virginia for six years, and have followed developments in the rest of the state (ROVA as it is sometimes called, as opposed to NOVA). I am struck by the deep attachment residents have to places like Luray, not minding a long commute to the job-rich Washington area each day. I think Virginia owes its rooted character to such attachments.
