About the McDonnell ad making no reference to the fact that he is the GOP candidate. In the 2008 elections, presidential and Congressional, Republicans put deliberate distance between themselves and George W. Bush, whose popularity rating was unenviable.
Virginia had for years a strong Republican tendency, just as Maryland, its neighbor, has had a Democratic one. I don’t believe Maryland is in political transition but Virginia might be. Republicans in it are on notice, and may need expert strategists and particularly appealing statewide candidates. I am sure, however, that quite a few General Assembly seats are safe Republican ones. It is when northern Virginaia enters the electoral equation that things change dramatically.
