The Post gave the example of a student who would not be able to identify Thomas Jefferson as the third President on a standardized test but who in his Portfolio could describe Monticello and the conflict between Jefferson’s ideas of equality and his ownership of slaves struck me as identifying the strengths of each method. The student who could do both would be ideal.
