I was struck by President Casteen’s thorough Virginia background and by his father’s comment about the role of the University in the early years of the Republic, when it had its share of conflicts in the matter of faculty appointments. Anyone presiding over Jefferson’s university has a huge challenge before him. I hope that while it continues to be a top institution it will also become a unique one.
