I was struck that 42% of Virginians are college graduates. I would guess that to be higher than the average for all states. That may be in significant part because of the proximity of the federal government (and its pervasive influence) to sections of Virginia, with its need for a considerable proportion of graduates.
The other reason may be that Thomas Jefferson, who valued education highly, did his work well, partly by helping to establish Washington as the federal capital.
