Here’s my take on the debate question:

Former Governor and United States Senator George Allen used football metaphors naturally in his campaigning. The Redskins once had their glory days, under his father’s tutelage. These days they are more likely to be on a losing streak, though their fans seem to love them unconditionally.
Allen’s book has this going for it that football and baseball have done their part in shaping daily conversation, contributing phrase like “end run” and “first base.” And baseball sometimes brings together fans of ballet and NASCAR.
