Considering the expense of a college education, one cannot but be grateful for Community colleges. I lived in England for many years, where university education and health are largely free because paid for with public funds, although students are increasingly being asked to contribute something. Nobody in America disputes that education through high school, paid for mainly through property taxes, should be free and open to all (excluding elite private schools). It is with college and university that a bewildering range of options begins: some pay six-figure sums for their higher education and others perhaps four-figure sums: not that quality always correlates with cost. The general reputation of institutuions may, however.
