  1. Frank Batten Sr. strikes me as a remarkable Virginian. The fact that this is the first occasion I have come across his name despite reading the Washington Post regularly for seven years suggests that his philanthropy took place largely out of the national limelight. His munificence to the three institutions he attended (the Culver Academy, UVA, and Harvard) are striking, as his role in founding Old Dominion University.
