$32,533.33
That’s how much 5 new elementary schools in Stafford County will cost per student. My math is 5 schools at 750 students each costing $122M. The money will be spent at different times in the future so it’s a bit unfair to quote it as current dollars. However, these projects often go over budget so I’ll call it a wash.
Why does this matter? Virginia needs an adequate public facilities law that charges developers a fee to cover the building of new infrastructure. And a four bedroom house can be expected to have how many children in school? 2? 3? That’s between $32,000 and $96,000 just for elementary schools. Then, add roads, police, sewer, water, etc.
The General Assembly has failed to enact any reasonable adequate public facilities law. Why? Go to http://www.vpap.org and look at who is contributing to the politicians. Builders, real estate lawyers, developers, real estate agents.
