Virginians won’t elect anyone perceived as mean-spirited. Johnson’s stutter mocking is mean-spirited, and McDonnell, by association, and by refusing to condemn such behavior, is guilty of it. It is a foolish, foolish blunder. Write this down where you can check it later: Deeds will be elected governor–despite the polls, despite Wilder, despite the herky-jerky campaign. There are other indicators afoot, but the ‘mean’ rule is inviolate. Deeds will be elected. Call me a fool now. You’ll call me a genius in November. I can wait. BKD
