The exodus continues.
Last night in her debate with Bill Bolling, Jody Wagner apparently backed away from Creigh Deeds’ position on tax increases for transportation, saying she
Wouldn’t raise taxes when people are hurting.
It’s an eminently sensible position.
But it does raise an important question.
Why?
Did it take the Democrats so long to get to a position that is simply common sense.
Do what you can on transportation now, while you focus on dealing with the contining budget shortfall responsibly. And work on developing a longer-term solution that could be implemented when the economy actually recovers.
Deeds position is that transportation is the first item he’ll address as Governor and that, if the Assembly brings him a tax increase, he’ll sign it.
After last evening, there is not another candidate running for statewide office supporting the “Taxes Now” option.
Wagner’s stance has made tonight’s debate that much more interesting.
In essence, she has introduced a new element into the taxes for transportation issue.
Will Deeds tweak his own position on taxes and adopt the Wagner Modification?
Or will he still be willing to say that taxes could be raised for transportation even when, as Wagner observes, “people are hurting?”

The operative word here being: “apparently.”
Jody has supported every tax increase over the past eight years, she said outright she’d raise the gasoline tax, and she spent most of the campaign in support of Deeds’s pledge to raise taxes.
Are we supposed to believe that she’s suddenly changed her mind? Typical politician.
Wagner is jumping ship, plain and simple.
She is following in her mentors’, Tim Kaine and Mark Warner, shoes and saying one thing to get elected and then pushing to hike taxes once she is no longer accountable to the voters. I guess what is amazing is that Creigh Deeds is willing to be honest about his position.
Will we get fooled again?
I am glad Jody Wagner has decided to backpedal to the sensible position (i.e. no new taxes during a recession). However, I find it interesting that she came to this position after 2 months of supporting the crazy Deeds tax plan and 8 years of supporting every tax increase in sight. With Wagner as LG in Richmond, I fear we would be paying more in gas taxes and several other taxes.
I think the only safe bet for ensuring this crazy tax increase doesn’t happen is to support Bill Bolling.
Jody Wagner spent her entire campaign telling everyone within earshot that she would raise taxes and she supported every tax increase for the last eight years. So now with two weeks left to go in the campaign, her poll numbers looking more miserable every day, she completely changes direction and opposes tax increases.
The question is simple. What do you think she would do if she won the election? Would she continue to do what she has done for the past EIGHT YEARS, and what she talked about the entire campaign – Raise taxes on everything? Or would she stick true to her last ditch effort to gain some traction..?
This is so transparent and pathetic, it’s hardly even worth talking about. Once again, Jody Wagner proves she is dishonest, and has no problem stretching the truth or even lying outright. She outright said she would raise the gas tax JUST LAST WEEK!
Jody, please at least be honest about what you stand for.
