The unpopular George W. hung over the 2008 presidential campaign, with Obama attacking his policies and McCain distancing himself from them. Now the latter’s running mate hovers over the Virginia gubernatorial race. In urging people to vote their values, she is clearly supporting McDonnell and at the same time preparing her own ground for 2012. But McDonnell wants to direct at least as much attention to job-creation and the state’s economy as to his social conservatism, in order to appeal to NOVA and independent voters. And so he is distancing himself from her.
