  1. The Prince William proposal for merit pay. More than thirty years ago the liberal arts college where I taught introduced something like that. I felt very didvided on the question. On the one hand, I was glad some teachers were rewarded for meritorious teaching or scholarship (the two can be in a jostling relationship), on the other it made teachers a little too anxious about where they stood in the salary pecking order, distracting them from their essential work. I felt too that academics should rise above the work-directly-leading-to-monetary- reward nexus, provided they were decently paid.
