Anita Kumar is reporting this morning that Governor-Elect McDonnell has chosen Bob Sledd as Secretary of Commerce and Trade.

This is another excellent choice that reinforces the significance that McDonnell is placing on taking whatever steps that are open to state government to enhance Virginia’s economic condition.

The former CEO of Performance Food Group, Sleddd is very highly respected in the Virginia business community.

I have gotten to know him a little bit over the years. He’s very bright, thoughtful and an excellent listener.

Sledd’ll be able to bring the business community and the state’s political leadership together around an economic development strategy. He’ll be a wonderful representative of Virginia to business leaders in other states thinking of relocating here.

In more personal terms, Bob Sledd is a warm individual of  high integrity. He and his family have been very generous in giving back to the community, often in ways for which they have declined any public reognition of their generosity.

I don’t think that the actions of any single state government can reverse national economic trends. But McDonnell has chosen well in making Sledd a key point person on economic development efforts.
