Amy Gardner says Morgan Griffith’s considering

A run against Rick Boucher in 2010.

With Terry Kilgore declining to run, it appeared that Boucher might get a free pass this year- something that had to be on the gift list of every incumbent congressional Democrat this past holiday season.

But Griffith told Gardner that “someone needs to run against Rick Boucher.”

You have to hand it to the Virginia Republicans.

They’re getting pretty clever with these one-word portents.

A few weeks ago it was George Allen saying “perhaps” when he was asked about running against Jim Webb in 2012.

Now we have Griffith’s “someone.”

Griffith, of course, could be an effective challenger.

He’s a tough and energetic campaigner.

He won’t have any problem appealing to the anti-Washington sentiment that’s sweeping the nation.

And as House Majority leader (who stays in office if he loses), he should be able to raise enough money to be competitive.

A race against Boucher won’t be easy for anyone.

He’s a very hard worker who has successfully (and usually easily) deflected all Republican someones that have challenged him.

Even in 2010, the GOP shouldn’t be too confident that Boucher can be defeated.

But then again, Griffith may be the kind of someone who’s not just anybody.
