In the last two days

By Kelsey Radcliffe, a student journalist

She broke the story of Bob Marshall’s comments suggesting that the birth of children with disabilities could be punishment for a previous abortion.

Today, every major paper in Virginia is following up on her story.

And by Isaac Graves,  citizen-investigator.

He produced an article for the National Examiner about the discretionary spending practices of Richmond City Council that was headlined yesterday in the Richmond Times Dispatch and has generated significant internal discussion within the Council itself.

There’s a lot to be worried about in the new media environment.

But Radcliffe and Graves have shown that hard work and good reporting can make a real difference today,

Even if its initially published in relatively obscure outlets.

And this is a story in itself.

  1. Abortion is a minefield, with feelings running high on both sides. One cannot tread too carefully. Not surprisingly, Mr. Marshall’s remarks, once reported, have gone “viral.”

  2. Great job! Especially when the supposed mainstream media HAS to pick up the story b/c of it going viral.

Radcliffe even got him to apologize for such a small minded and discriminatory remark. Shame on Bob Marshall!

  3. DR-CATHY: You’re right, that’s a considerable accomplishment. Marshall has never backed down from any of the outrageous things he’s said before.
