About the early retirement plan at Christopher Newport University. Some professors run out of steam in their fifities. Some find that their subject has changed in ways they are uncomfortable with but are labelled unresilient reactionaries. Some want to take off in a completely different intellectual direction, and are still vigorous enough to do so. The plan seems to me an interesting one, not unlike those available elesewhere, provided no pressure is unfairly applied to genuinely independent-minded faculty.
